Account abuse tools and evaluation

Evaluate fake-account, takeover, referral and promotion-abuse controls across registration, login and sensitive actions.

Account abuse includes unauthorized access to a real account and misuse of accounts to extract value or bypass a product rule. The strongest evaluation starts with the protected action: signup, login, a referral payment, a discount redemption or a change to recovery details.

Define the rule before choosing a detector

Several accounts can belong to a legitimate household, business or support workflow. Specify who is entitled to a benefit and which behavior violates the policy. Technical relationships then become evidence about a stated rule instead of an unexplained block.

Place checks near the expensive action

Creating an account, claiming a bonus and changing a payout destination have different consequences. Use account and device history at the point where value or control changes. A registration-only integration can miss what happens after a previously ordinary account is compromised.

Keep a route back for the genuine user

OWASP authentication guidance supports reauthentication around risk events. Design the stronger verification step, recovery route and review record together. Measure restored access and legitimate completion alongside prevented abuse, so the control remains understandable to support teams.

FAQ

Does every extra account imply fraud?

No. Interpret account relationships against the product’s own eligibility and access rules.

Does bot protection stop all account abuse?

It can disrupt automated activity. Human-operated misuse, stolen sessions and policy abuse may require additional account and identity evidence.
